PROJECT 01 · HEALTHCARE ENGINEERING

Medical Device Connectivity & Real-Time Clinical Data Acquisition

Engineering investigation and development focused on acquiring real-time data from medical devices with different physical interfaces, communication technologies, protocol architectures, and levels of technical documentation.

Challenge

Medical equipment may expose clinical information through serial interfaces, Ethernet networks, gateways, standardized interfaces, or manufacturer-specific communication protocols. Integrating these systems requires understanding both the physical communication layer and the structure and meaning of the transmitted data.

Engineering Approach

Analysis of technical documentation, physical interfaces and communication behavior, followed by traffic observation, characterization of message structures, identification of parameters, implementation of acquisition methods, and experimental validation.

Technologies & Interfaces

RS-232 · RS-422/485 · Ethernet · TCP/IP · Wi-Fi · device gateways · proprietary communication protocols · message decoding · data mapping

Clinical Data

Vital signs · physiological waveforms · alarms · device status · ventilatory parameters · infusion data · therapy-related information

Outcome

Transformation of device-level communication into structured and clinically meaningful information that can be consumed by software platforms and healthcare integration systems.

PROJECT 02 · IoMT & INTEROPERABILITY

From Medical Devices to Healthcare Information Systems

Design and investigation of integration architectures capable of moving information from physical medical equipment through acquisition and processing layers toward clinical information systems.

Challenge

Medical devices generate heterogeneous data through different communication technologies and proprietary or standardized mechanisms. Healthcare applications, however, require consistent, reliable, and semantically meaningful information.

Architecture

Medical devices → connectivity interfaces → acquisition services → data interpretation and normalization → integration layer → healthcare information systems.

Interoperability Context

Medical devices · IoMT · real-time data pipelines · integration services · clinical data models · HL7 · FHIR · healthcare information systems

Engineering Perspective

The work bridges low-level device communication and higher-level healthcare interoperability, connecting physical equipment, communication protocols, software systems, and clinical information flows.

PROJECT 03 · AUGMENTED REALITY & GAMIFICATION

GRAAL — Gamified Responsible Augmented Assembly Line

GRAAL is an interactive system combining augmented reality and gamification to support operators during manual assembly processes.

Challenge

Manual assembly operations require accuracy, procedural consistency, operator attention, and rapid interpretation of work instructions while maintaining productivity and quality.

System Design

The project combines augmented reality guidance, gamification mechanisms, operator interaction, performance feedback, process modeling, and experimental evaluation.

Research & Validation

The system was developed and evaluated as part of doctoral research in Electrical Engineering and subsequently evolved into further research on industrial training applications.

Recognition

João e Maria contra a Bruxa Guloseima e suas Diabetes

Serious Game — System Demonstration
Interactive health education focused on healthy habits and obesity prevention.

A serious game developed to promote healthy habits and contribute to the prevention of obesity among adolescents.

Challenge

Transform complex health education concepts into an interactive experience capable of engaging adolescents while addressing multiple dimensions related to obesity prevention and healthy living.

Approach

The project combined instructional design, serious games, game design, health education, applied computing, prototyping, and evaluation.

Outcome

A functional serious game and associated scientific research, including a paper awarded 1st place for Best Paper in the Art & Design Track at SBGames 2017.
